The consecration by Archbishop Benjamin Nzimbi of the Kenya Anglican Church of two US bishops raises the temperature of the rancorous dispute over acceptance of gay and lesbian people as bishops dividing the two wings of the 70 million-strong Global Anglican Church:

But what Kenya's Archbishop Benjamin Nzimbi has done is not simply about homosexuality.

It goes to the heart of the way the Anglican Church sees itself.
Anglicans, like Catholic and Orthodox Christians, cherish the unity of their Church above almost everything else.
And the focus of unity is the bishop.
A very large part of the reason for having bishops at all is to give physical form to the Church's unity.
Symbolically, emotionally and in most of the ways that matter to believers, bishops are there to show that the Church remains united.
Heading for anarchy?
So when one bishop (in this case Dr Nzimbi) acts in a way that undercuts the authority of another bishop, it is the clearest possible way of emphasising the Church's disunity.

The Radical Fundamentalist Anglican Church in the West is using the Kenyan situation as a springboard towards creating a separate church within a church in the United States and beyond.

WHO warns of global epidemic risk

In a report, A Safer Future, the WHO says new diseases are emerging at the "historically unprecedented" rate of one per year.

Since the 1970s, 39 new diseases have developed, and in the last five years alone, the WHO has identified more than 1,100 epidemics including cholera, polio and bird flu.

"It would be extremely naive and complacent to assume that there will not be another disease like Aids, another Ebola, or another Sars, sooner or later," the report says.

Eighteen men have been remanded in prison following their arrest for alleged sodomy in northern Nigeria, the state-owned news agency, Nan, reports.

The men were arrested in a hotel in north-eastern Bauchi state which is governed by the Islamic Sharia law.

The Sharia punishment for sodomy is death by stoning.

The men, reportedly wearing women's clothes, are said to have gone to Bauchi from neighbouring states to celebrate a "gay wedding".

Sharia judge Malam Tanimu ordered that the 18 be remanded in prison after they were arraigned before him on Wednesday.

Prosecuting police officer Tadius Boboi said the men's actions had contravened Sharia law, adopted in Bauchi and a dozen other states in Muslim northern Nigeria in 2000.

More than a dozen Nigerian Muslims have been sentenced to death by stoning and for sexual offences ranging from adultery and homosexuality. But none of these death sentences have actually been carried out as they were either thrown out on appeal or commuted to prison terms as a result of pressure from human rights groups.

But there have been two amputations in north-western Zamfara State which pioneered the introduction of the Islamic legal system in the country.

Rectal trauma and drug use key in sexual transmission of HCV

The factors involved in the sexual transmission of hepatitis C virus amongst HIV-positive gay men may be more complex than previously thought, according to German research presented to the recent 4th International AIDS Society Conference in Sydney.

Investigators from Bonn initially found, in common with several other recent studies, that unprotected anal intercourse was associated with a risk of hepatitis C. But in subsequent statistical analysis, only snorting drugs and rectal bleeding after sex were risk factors for infection with hepatitis C. The study’s researchers fear that hepatitis C prevention that focuses only on consistent condom use could be too narrow in its cope and overlook potentially more important risk behaviours.

Doctors from across Europe have been observing mini-epidemics of hepatitis C virus in HIV-positive gay men. Several studies have implicated unprotected anal sex as a significant risk factor for the sexual transmission of hepatitis C, with other research showing an association with fisting, drug use and some sexually transmitted infections.

Although few would seriously doubt that hepatitis C is being sexually transmitted between HIV-positive gay men, there is, nevertheless, very little evidence of sexual transmission of the virus in HIV-negative gay men, or in HIV-positive heterosexual couples. Although one study found that hepatitis C was more likely to be found in the semen of those with HIV, therefore explaining transmission of the virus via unprotected sex, some investigators believe that the factors involved in the sexual transmission of hepatitis C may be much more complex.

FDA Approves New HIV Med

Pfizer announced today that the FDA has approved its new HIV drug Selzentry (maraviroc).

The drug is the first of a new class of HIV drugs to be approved in ten years. Selzentry is intended for patients who have the HIV-1 strain of the virus and are already resistant to multiple HIV drugs.

Selzentry is the first in a class of drugs known as CCR5 antagonists, which block the CCR5 co-receptor, the virus' predominant entry route into T-cells. Selzentry stops the R5 virus on the outside surface of the cells before it enters, rather than fighting the virus inside as do all other classes of oral HIV medicines.

Selzentry will become available next month. Pfizer plans on marketing the drug as Celsentri outside the USA. "Cell sentry", get it? Selzentry must be taken twice a day, unlike many current HIV meds.

Feest met een vleugje protest

Voor het podium op het Rembrandtplein heeft een aantal Engelse jongeren al meer dan één pint op. Languit liggen ze in het gras, omringd door heren met roze pruiken. Een klein meisje danst voor hun neuzen, een roze sluier om haar hoofd gebonden. ''Als dát geen toonbeeld van tolerantie is,'' wijst een buurjongen.

Elders, op de Zeedijk, bekijkt een Britse voetbalsupporter verbouwereerd het net losgebarsten straatfeest. Dan schudt hij het hoofd en maakt rechtsomkeert. Een aantal Ajaxsupporters baant zich intussen een weg door de roze menigte. Dat ze er 'niet bij horen', laten ze duidelijk merken. ''Ajax!'' bulderen ze. ''Jóden, Jóden.'' Ze krijgen een vriendelijk schoudertikje. Niks aan de hand.

Eigenlijk is het feestje op de Zeedijk 'een staande demonstratie', aldus Don Nottet van gaybar The Queens Head. Met zijn collega's van De Barderij en De Engel van Amsterdam heeft hij de straatpartij uitgeroepen tot het grote 'Homo's-wijken-niet-voor-hooligans-feest'. Een vergunning voor een groots openluchtspektakel ging aan de Zeedijk voorbij. Dus geen buitenbars of uitbundige straatoptredens.

''Maar we mogen wel tien minuten versterkt geluid laten horen.''En die worden, zoals dat een echte demo betaamt, gevuld met boze toespraken van onder anderen de net tot 'Mister Grey Pride' uitgeroepen Bob van Schijndel. Die begint met een - cynisch - bedankje aan de politie.

''Voor hun inzet om de voetbalhooligans te beschermen tegen agressieve homo's.'' Balancerend boven op een hoge bartafel roept hij de menigte toe: ''Goed dat jullie er zijn om duidelijk te maken dat er volgend jaar wel een podiumvergunning moet komen.'' Zowel voor de Zeedijk als voor de Warmoesstraat, waar menige 'rijpere homo' zich verpoost.

Na het protest is het tijd voor feest. De nergens ontbrekende Gebroeders Grimm hebben er hun roze pakken met tienduizenden glinsterende kraaltjes voor aangetrokken. Alles handgemaakt. Een andere feestvierder houdt het liever op een leren tuigje, veel blote huid en tattoos. Oók puur handwerk.

En hier en daar duikt het protestshirt op met 'I am ashamed. Amsterdam Gay Capital or what'. Bedenker Jan Katger heeft er zeker 265 gemaakt. ''En ze gaan als koude pilsjes over de toonbank,'' weet medepartyganger Oebele Kooistra, ook al een van de drijvende krachten achter het protest.

In het nauwe straatje is voor bezoekers in lichamelijke nood een EHBO-post opgezet. Voor 'Bloeddruk, Suiker, Pleisters'.

Zondag, tijdens het grote slotfeest, houdt de bescheiden menigte zich voornamelijk op de been met bier en water. Door de hitte is het bij de Stopera één optocht van ontblote bovenlijven, met of zonder piercings. Een jongen heeft boven zijn borst 'Take no prisoners' laten tatoeëren. Loom wordt gehoor gegeven aan de aanmoedigingen van een Amsterdamse zanger: ''En nu allemaal de handjes in de lucht. Van links naar recht. Niet zo mat. Klap maar eens voor jezelf. Dat je hier bent en niet in Zandvoort.

''Na al dat jolijt is het weer even tijd voor een ernstig woord. COC-voorzitter Frank van Dalen heeft een nieuw begrip gehoord tijdens de Pride: heteroprovocatie. ''Notabene uit eigen kring. Met je vriend hand in hand over straat lopen zou 'heteroprovocerend' zijn, zei een jongen. Homo's die dat doen zouden om problemen vragen.'' Wat het Stoperaplein daarvan vindt? ''Boeh!'' klinkt het. De boodschap van deze Pride is duidelijk, aldus Van Dalen. ''We pikken geen geweld tegen homo's in Amsterdam.''

Inmiddels loopt het tegen zes uur 's avonds. Tijd voor, opnieuw, een hommage 'aan de man die dit voor Amsterdam allemaal mogelijk heeft gemaakt': de onlangs overleden voormalige burgemeester Schelto Patijn. In de voorhoede van het publiek zijn witte ballonnen uitgedeeld. ''Maar pas loslaten als Sandra Reemer dat straks ook doet. Niet eerder! Want dat vinden AT 5 en SBS 6 geen leuk plaatje,'' wordt vanaf het podium gewaarschuwd.

Reemer zal haar optreden, zo is aangekondigd, beginnen met een speciaal muzikaal eerbetoon aan Patijn. Hoewel, het blijkt gewoon een liedje van haar cd over - als we het allemaal goed hebben verstaan - een actrice aan het eind van haar carrière. Kennelijk gekozen vanwege het refrein: ''Het is nu voorbij, echt voorbij, geen toegift meer.

''De ballonnen gaan de lucht in, Reemer spreidt er de armen bij uit en dan gaat het feest alweer snel over tot de orde van de dag. Of, zoals de zangeres het zelf zegt: ''En nu iets met een beetje meer tempo.''

Agressie tijdens Pride

In Amsterdam is een 34-jarige Ierse gay in de nacht van zaterdag op zondag zwaargewond geraakt nadat hij op de Nassaukade / Kinkerstraat met een zwaar voorwerp werd neergeslagen. Het slachtoffer is met een kaak- en neusbreuk en een verschoven nekwervel opgenomen in een ziekenhuis en moest een spoedoperatie ondergaan. Zijn toestand wordt omschreven als stabiel. De politie is een groot onderzoek gestart. Het rechercheteam van District West roept getuigen op zich te melden.

Even na 03.00 uur liep de Ier met z'n Spaanse vriend over de Nassaukade, terugkomend van de Gay Pride. Twee agressieve jongemannen riepen iets naar het stel waarna een korte woordenwisseling ontstond. Dit ontaardde in een handgemeen waarbij het slachtoffer met een hard voorwerp werd geslagen en bijna direct knock-out ging.

De politie heeft in de nacht van zondag op maandag met een speciaal team getracht zicht te krijgen op de mogelijke daders. Ondanks de extra inzet van agenten in burger en op de motor kon nog niemand worden gearresteerd.

Omdat er rekening wordt gehouden met homogerelateerd geweld nemen politie en het openbaar ministerie de zaak hoog op.

De voortvluchtige daders, een Nederlandse man van begin twintig en een Arabische-Marokkaanse uitziende man van eind twintig, worden gezocht. Ze worden verdacht van poging tot doodslag.

De Ier ligt met een gebroken kaak, gebroken neus en een verschoven nekwervel in het ziekenhuis.

De recherche van District West is op zoek naar getuigen van dit voorval. Zij kunnen zich melden via: 0900 - 8844.

In stadsdeel Oud-West werden verder twee Amerikaanse homo's door drie vermoedelijk Marokkaanse jongens uitgescholden, geschopt en geslagen en belaagd met traangas, zo meldt Het Parool. De politie onderzoekt nog of het gaat om geweld tegen homo's of om een beroving.

Diezelfde nacht werden twee studenten aangehouden nadat zij een krans van het Homomonument in het water hadden geschopt. Zij zijn opgepakt voor openlijke geweldpleging en zullen worden voorgeleid.

Drie keer is het afgelopen weekend misgegaan.

Twee Amerikaanse homo's werden door drie jongens uitgescholden, geschopt en met pepperspray mishandeld, er werd een krans bij het homomonument in het water geschopt en er werd een Ier zwaar mishandeld.

De homoseksuele Ierse man liep na de Gay Pride met zijn Spaanse vriend terug naar het hotel, toen ze op de Nassaukade woorden kregen met twee agressieve jongens. Dat liep uit op een drama: de Ier kreeg een klap in z'n gezicht met een zwaar voorwerp, waardoor hij zwaargewond met een kaak- en neusbreuk en een verschoven nekwervel in het ziekenhuis belandde. Hij werd met spoed geopereerd en zijn toestand is nu stabiel.

De politie neemt de zaak hoog op en roept getuigen op zich te melden. De daders worden verdacht van poging tot doodslag.

Mishandelingen homo's Kinkerbuurt

In de omgeving van de Kinkerstraat zijn tijdens het Gay Pride weekend twee homostellen belaagd.

Vrijdagnacht werden twee Amerikanen met pepperspray bespoten en geslagen.

Zaterdagnacht werd een Ierse homo met een zwaar voorwerp in het gezicht geslagen. Hij is met ernstige verwondingen in het ziekenhuis opgenomen.

Zondag werd tevergeefs een actie op touw gezet om de daders op heterdaad te betrappen. Volgens de politie gaat het echter om verschillende incidenten waarbij in totaal vijf daders betrokken waren.

Geweld vermoedelijk homogerelateerd

De politie houdt er sterk rekening mee dat het geweld tegen de homoparen van afgelopen weekend homogerelateerd is.

In de Kinkerbuurt werden twee homoparen belaagd, een 34-jarige Ierse man raakte daarbij zwaargewond. Bij het homomonument bij de Westerkerk werd een krans vernield en in het water gegooid.

Amsterdam stond de afgelopen dagen in het teken van de Gay Pride, het jaarlijkse festival voor homo's en lesbiënnes. Veel deelnemers spraken zich daar uit tegen het geweld en de intolerantie waar homo's de laatste tijd in Amsterdam het slachtoffer van zijn.

Kon ik niet laten en ben toch gaan inloggen op de HVN Forum nieuw stijl.

Na 15 minuten lezen van wat er allemaal daar staat heb ik alles afgesloten en een kop koffie gemaakt om op adem te komen.

Pagina na pagina klaagzang.

Elke poging om een redelijk discussie te beginnen over seksualiteit wordt door anderen aangevallen en de mensen zelf de grond ingeboord op gruwelijke wijze.

Niets veranderd dus in de afgelopen 3 maanden.

Zijn deze mensen representatief voor de vereniging? Nog erger, zijn deze mensen representatief van alle mensen met Hiv? Dear God in heaven hoop ik van niet ...

Een ding is zeker .... ik ga nooit meer meedoen aan welke forum dan ook, welke discussie dan ook, welke debat dan ook over seksualiteit, homo's en Hiv.

Ik kijk wel uit ....

Safe(r) Sex?

How 'Safe' is 'Safe Sex'?

I've searched the Net for hard evidence on the safety of condoms and the use of condoms, but not even the 'holier than thou' Terence Higgins Trust dares to put a figure on it.

"Of all the ways you can lower the risks you take in your sex life using condoms is the most effective. Condoms have one of the highest success rates at stopping unwanted pregnancies and preventing many sexually transmitted infections, including HIV (the virus that can lead to AIDS)."

First of all, the fact that the THT even suggests that there are alternatives to condom use is something that in the Netherlands unthinkable is. A hint that risk reduction strategies could be as useful and/ or efficient as condom use is seen as almost criminal here.

The Netherlands is also the only nation left that talks about 'Safe Sex'. The rest of the world agrees that condom use is efficient but not 100% and can therefore never be called 'Safe', at the most 'Safer'.

The strange hypocrisy is of course that so called low risk activities such as dick sucking etc. are now regarded as somehow more acceptable. Or te be more precise, the risk is more acceptable. There are no figures for this, no documentation, no tests or research. How the hell we got the idea that some low risk activities were 'safe' and others 'not safe' is beyond me. A sort of trade off?

The only way to avoid transferring the virus van one person to the other is if both people have the virus already i.e. serosorting. Why on earth is this so unacceptable? Its a damn sight more effective than a condom at halting the spread of hiv.

Is it the fact that it implies that hiv infected people have sex? Should sick people have sex? Should the men in the invisible wheelchairs be celibate, or even sexless?

Maybe its there that the source of the discrimination lies. For discrimination it is however we try to rationalise it away.


Its okay to be hiv positive.

Its reasonably okay to be hiv positive and gay.

Its not okay to be hiv positive, gay and have sex with other men.
