Although we tend to think that we are the only ones with problems here in Amsterdam its not true ....

An examination of police complaints across Scotland reveals a tripling of hate crimes against members of the LGBT community, The Daily Record newspaper reported Monday.

The paper said that the situation may be worse than what it uncovered. A spokesperson for one police force admitted to The Record that it does not keep records on crimes based on the victim’s sexuality.

Of those forces which do keep records, the number of hate crimes has jumped from only a handful three years ago to the hundreds this year. The worst area was Strathclyde, where 50 crimes were reported in 2005, but so far this year, 216 have been reported.

Scottish civil rights leaders called the results of the study “horrific” and “appalling.”

Denial

Are Hiv+ Gay Men really ill?

I know it sounds contentious, but honestly, do we look ill? sound ill? act ill?

Well, no. Or at least no-one sees us when we are. And when asked, we will sometimes acknowledge the fact but will almost always deny the results of being ill.

Its hardly surprising.

Chronically ill people can choose to accept or deny their chronic illness. 

Even though for a short while being 'Poz' may have had its heyday as 'trendy', being chronically ill does not fit into the traditional lifestyle of a Gay Man. 

Denial is in fact the only way out for many Hiv+ Gay Men.

Not denial of being hiv+, nor of the disease itself, but of being 'ill' because of it.

As a sub-sub-sub-culture, we have developed this extraordinary schizophrenic atitude towards our own 'Poz'ness'.

On the one hand we are chronically ill and in need of a constant supply of high end highly toxic expensive designer drugs to keep us alive, and on the other hand its 'life as usual'.

Not withstanding the Dutch tendency to minimise emotion, I find it incredible how our mind's self-defense mechanism kicks in when confronted with something of the magnitude of 'life threatening disease'. 

What does the mind use to avoid overload, you've guessed it, denial.

Its amazing to me how the media manages to present us as victim and perpetrator. What's even more amazing is the Aids machine in the Netherlands that manages to do exactly the same. But with one exception, the emphasis of the 'Prevention lobby' is on perpetrator and not victim.

We, as Hiv+ Gay men need to see ourselves as neither. 

We are not, always, sometimes, never have been patients, clients, victims, perps, murderers, crazies, junkies, drug abusers, sex addicts, pathetic, needy, healthy, hypochondriacs ....

We need to create our own image.

We need to stop the denial.

Optimism

No, I refuse to be optimistic about hiv and/or aids.

And no, that doesn't mean I have to be cynical either.

Realistic.

In New York, the third leading cause of death in men under the age of 65 is still aids.

People with hiv climb mountains, swim rivers, dance the tango .... and die.

Don't be silly. Honestly, who still dies from AIDS?

And no, I don't mean all the little brown babies in Africa.

In a world where people are still dying of opportunistic diseases as a result of suppressed immune systems I see no reason to lie.

I mean all the Western European Gay men whose HAART medication fails to handle the virus, whose liver gets eaten away by cancer because they are more at risk than non-hiv'ers, whose lungs rot because they smoke/have smoked and are 3 times more at risk of acquiring lung cancer.

Men who have never been tested and now see themselves as too old to catch hiv, die because the medication comes too late. Because they only find out they are infected when they wake up in the Emergency Room of their local hospital.

Men who have religiously taken their medication for 10 years or more and now die of rectal cancer, lung cancer, heart disease, stomach cancer, lymphoma's, liver and kidney failure etc. All or none of which may or may not be related to the hiv virus and/or medication against it.

Men who were infected with a hiv strain that is resistant to known drugs, who live day by day until the next new aids drug comes on the market. Brave men who sometimes just can't hold on long enough.

Men who lose faith in medicine, who turn to non-western doctors for a gentler way of surviving, who are tired of medication, tired of fighting.

No,

Being a Gay man with hiv is not something to be optimistic about.

I can live till I'm 90, but I will probably still have the problems to face that I face every day.

Chronic tiredness, swollen glands, diarrhea, opportunistic infections.

The anxiety of discovering a bruise, a mark, a sore, a pain, an ache. What is it? Its nothing. Its everything. Its nothing.

Optimism is a word we use to ignore hiv and aids.

Optimism makes it all go away.

It won't go away.

Gay Weddings

Of course that's not quite true. After all, if you want to do camp then there's nowhere campier than a church now is there?

Miles of lace, acres of flowers, kilometers of ribbons, buttons and bows.

Men looking like men and women looking like women.

A public display of affection.

An official piece of paper declaring love, honour and obedience (okay, that one's optional).

A Gay marriage is everything a relationship 'should' be, as a black on white binding contract.

So all the years we have spent as Gay men working on alternative relationship forms, all those nights of fighting down the jealousy in a bar, all those lonely days when he was with his 'fuck buddy' are gone in one flourish of the pen.

Of course they're not, but hypocrisy works in Gay marriages just as well as in Straight ones. The wedding certificate makes a wonderful blindfold to all your husband's (and your own) indiscretions.

Ah, hypocrisy! Now there's a word we can relate to ....

From the BBC - just so unbelievable that I'm quoting it in its entirety ......

An Italian court has ordered the government to pay 100,000 euros to a man who had to retake his driving test because he was gay.

Danilo Giuffrida, now 26, told doctors he was homosexual during a medical examination for military service. The information was passed to the defence and transport ministries. Mr Giuffrida was told to repeat his driving test or have his licence suspended because of his "sexual identity disturbance".

Mr Giuffrida passed his test for the second time but his licence was renewed for just one year rather than the usual 10 years because of his homosexuality.

A court in Catania, Sicily, ordered the ministries to pay damages on the basis that Mr Giuffrida's constitutional rights had been breached and that homosexuality could not be considered a "mental illness".

The judge said the actions of the ministries showed "evident sexual discrimination".

Mr Giuffrida welcomed the sentence as "a step forwards for civil rights."

Fuck - did we ever get any further with Gay Rights than 30 years ago?

Have we been kidding ourselves all these years?

Was anything achieved at all?

The 'Other' Church

The Anglican Church is still ripping itself apart. After 500 years they have finally officially agreed that women can be ordained as priests (although it won't actually happen any earlier than 2018). But the Gay issue is tearing at the very fabric of the church's constitution.

With the Bible as both sword and shield both sides fight it out in a very un-english way in public brawls and even in their own churches. This week the openly Gay bishop, the Right Reverend Gene Robinson was heckled in church. Of course the congregation responded by singing a hymn whilst he was removed.

Conservatives have never been able to use the Bible to deny the existence of women, just their place in the leadership of the church.

However, the Bible has been very useful over the last few centuries as 'evidence' against the very existence of homosexuality.

In the end, I don't care what the church decides on the subject of Gay Bishops yes or no. I believe that religion as such is anti-humanitarian. However I do care about why they are even discussing the subject.

Religion as excuse for discrimination.

Hard Rock Cafe Amsterdam

Until very recently indeed, the Hard Rock Cafe in Amsterdam was one of the few employers here who openly hired Gay men who were Hiv+. Gay+'ers could be assured of sympathetic employers and colleagues, flexible working times, openness and honesty.

However, the Hard Rock Cafe (at least in Amsterdam) seems to be conducting a 'purge' of Hiv+'ers in a vicious and heartless way.

People report being pushed around to get them to leave of their own volition, or being tricked into getting their contracts ended without hope of disability pay.

Threatening phone calls, mails, letters - the usual corporate stuff.

Shame.

All about HIV, all about us

I received in the post a brochure with an invitation to a symposium.

It looks like a very expensive brochure, and a very expensive symposium even though it tells me it is free. Its in a very expensive location in a very expensive part of Holland too.

But it is from the Hiv Vereniging Nederland.

And its called 'All about HIV, all about us'.

But I'm a bit confused about the 'us' bit.

You see I've read the brochure from cover to cover and back again and I can't find 'me'.

There is no mention of 'Gay Men' in any of the readings or workshops planned for the day, and the actual word 'Gay' is only used once in the entire brochure.

So maybe you can understand my confusion as to why the Hiv Vereniging Nederland should send me a brochure and invitation to a symposium about everybody else with Hiv except me....

Dancing

I haven't danced for years. Not the monkey shuffle that passes for dancing in the gay circuit, but 'proper' dancing.

This for a former Gold Medal winner Ballroom and Latin American West Midlands region of (approx.) 1974 ....

I haven't Tap danced since the New York run of BlooLips in (approx.) 1983 ....

My last Classical Ballet lesson was 1979 (that one I know for certain).

In New York I was part of a group of gay male dancers who, led by a fiery Cuban named Juan, performed the Tango male to male. I loved it, the passion, the power, the strength was incredible. And yes it was incredibly sexy to do and to see. Its really hard, if not impossible, to not get seriously physically turned on when holding and being held by a man for considerable periods of time in positions that defy convention.

But the power of it .... just the speed made control essential, and the strength that was necessary to maintain that control was immense. This was no malleable little woman being shuffled across the parquet floor, these were big strong men wrestling to keep themselves and their equally strong partners from flying out of control.

The equality of men with men was something I have always remembered. Something so traditionally 'nancy' as ballroom dancing as a true expression of the power, strength and passion inherent in the male.

But I've no idea where I could do that sort of thing now. Not in Amsterdam anyway.

JudaChristIslamisme in Politieke Amsterdam

De ChristenUnie heeft afstand genomen van het opinieartikel over homoseksualiteit van Yvette Lont, raadslid voor de ChristenUnie in Amsterdam-Zuidoost, dat dinsdag in het Nederlands Dagblad heeft gestaan.

Lont schreef: ,"God haat deze zonde en het verdient de 'geestelijke dood'.''

Volgens haar is er alleen genade voor homo's als ze met iemand van het andere geslacht trouwen of anders celibatair leven. Ze schreef dat God de zonde van homoseksualiteit haat en haalde teksten uit de Bijbelboeken Leviticus en Romeinen aan, waarin staat dat God homoseksualiteit ,,een gruwel'' vindt en ,,schandelijk''.

Lont heeft gisteren in een brief aan homobelangenorganisatie COC, homobeweging Embrace Pink en de Gay Krant haar excuses aangeboden. Ze schrijft dat het nooit haar bedoeling is geweest mensen te kwetsen en dat ze het opinieartikel niet als politica schreef, maar als voorganger van een evangelische gemeente. Ze schrijft dat ze het daarom niet als politica had moeten ondertekenen.

De ChristenUnie, die afstand nam van het stuk, heeft gisteren in een schriftelijke verklaring laten weten dat ze de uitleg van Lont accepteert.

Het artikel heeft voor veel beroering gezorgd. Homobeweging Embrace Pink schreef een boze brief aan Yvette Lont, waarin onder meer stond dat ze de passages over naastenliefde in de Bijbel blijkbaar niet goed heeft gelezen. Embrace Pink riep mensen op om protestmails aan Lont te sturen. Ook COC-voorzitter Frank van Dalen maakte zich boos over het artikel en de Gay Krant berichtte erover.

Andere weg voor homo's

In de krant van 23 augustus las ik met verbazing enige standpunten van dr. J. Hoek. Met name het standpunt dat 'overspel zondiger is dan homoseksualiteit', waarvoor hij bijbelse gronden meent te kunnen aanvoeren, kon ik niet voorbij laten gaan zonder hierop te reageren.

De Protestantse Kerk in Nederland beweegt zich volgens prof. Hoek als het gaat om homoseksualiteit tussen gedogen en goedkeuren. Ze is op zoek naar duidelijke richtlijnen en beleidskeuzes hierin.

Hij geeft aan dat sommige kerken de homo's hebben afgewezen en er niet goed mee zijn omgegaan.

Evangelisten hebben goedkope en snelle genezingen geboden.

Ik zou zeggen: Gelukkig maar!

Genezing was nodig voor een bepaalde groep homoseksuelen die uit lust en losbandigheid deze seksuele handelingen hebben verricht en zich van deze wandel hebben bekeerd.

Er zijn er velen die nu getrouwd zijn, kinderen hebben en in de dienst van de Heer staan.

Anderen zullen ervoor kunnen kiezen vanwege hun geaardheid of niet volgroeide of verkeerde genitaliën, geboren in een verkeerd lichaam etc, celibatair te leven, zoals ook de eunuch volgens de Bijbel.

Hebben deze mensen gevoelens en kunnen ze liefhebben? Ja, maar ze geven hun leven als een levend offer en in dienst van de Heer en kiezen ervoor als 'Paulus' verder te leven.

Laten wij niet met de wereldgeesten meegaan. Laten wij niet dwalen en de homoseksuele leefwijze goed praten 'omdat het toch liefde is', maar weten wat het Woord van God zegt. De liefde heft Gods gebod niet op, maar is juist de vervulling van de wet (Romeinen 13:10b). In Matteüs 19:4: ,,Hebt gij niet gelezen, dat de Schepper hen in den beginne als man en vrouw heeft gemaakt?' Dat is van den beginne Gods doel en intentie geweest. Dat is het beeld van Christus en zijn gemeente. Bruidegom en bruid. Niet bruidegom en bruidegom.

Als we de Bijbel lezen is het door heel het boek heen duidelijk dat homoseksueel gedrag wordt afgewezen. Leviticus 18:22: ,,En gij zult geen gemeenschap hebben met een die van het mannelijk geslacht is, zoals men gemeenschap heeft met een vrouw, een gruwel is het!''

Zouden ze toen ook van elkaar gehouden hebben?' Ongetwijfeld en toch keurt de Heer dit af.

Lees Romeinen 1:26: Onder het kopje 'Schuld der heidenen en hun straf': ,,Daarom heeft God hen in hun hartstochten overgegeven aan schandelijk lusten, want hun vrouwen hebben de natuurlijke omgang vervangen door de tegen natuurlijke. 27: Eveneens hebben de mannen de natuurlijke omvang met de vrouw opgegeven, en zijn in wellust voor elkaar ontbrand. 28: En daar zij verwerpelijk achten God te erkennen, heeft God hen overgegeven aan een verwerpelijk denken om te doen wat niet betaamt. 29: vervuld van allerlei onrechtvaardigheid, boosheid, hebzucht en slechtheid, vol nijd, moord, twist, list en kwaadaardigheid; oorblazers, lasteraars, haters van God, verwatenen, overmoedigen, grootsprekers, vindingrijk in het kwaad, hun eigen ouders ongehoorzaam; onverstandig; onbestendig, zonder hart of barmhartigheid.''

Dat is nogal wat! Ik kan niet zien dat overspel in het huwelijk een 'zwaardere' zonde is dan wat hier over homoseksualiteit geschreven staat. Laten wij niet zomaar proefballonnen opgooien omdat het onderwerp een hype is in de wereld. Dat het debat in christelijke kringen wordt gevoerd, is prima, maar laten we met zuivere argumenten komen.

Ja, God haat deze zonde, en het verdient de 'geestelijke' dood. Maar wij leven in een tijd van genade, en zullen genade moeten schenken aan degene die van zijn homofiele pad wenst af te stappen. Wij kunnen hen bereiken door hen lief te hebben en hen over onze Heer te vertellen. Dan horen ze ook dat er ook een andere weg is. Een weg ten eeuwig leven.

The consecration by Archbishop Benjamin Nzimbi of the Kenya Anglican Church of two US bishops raises the temperature of the rancorous dispute over acceptance of gay and lesbian people as bishops dividing the two wings of the 70 million-strong Global Anglican Church:

But what Kenya's Archbishop Benjamin Nzimbi has done is not simply about homosexuality.

It goes to the heart of the way the Anglican Church sees itself.
Anglicans, like Catholic and Orthodox Christians, cherish the unity of their Church above almost everything else.
And the focus of unity is the bishop.
A very large part of the reason for having bishops at all is to give physical form to the Church's unity.
Symbolically, emotionally and in most of the ways that matter to believers, bishops are there to show that the Church remains united.
Heading for anarchy?
So when one bishop (in this case Dr Nzimbi) acts in a way that undercuts the authority of another bishop, it is the clearest possible way of emphasising the Church's disunity.

The Radical Fundamentalist Anglican Church in the West is using the Kenyan situation as a springboard towards creating a separate church within a church in the United States and beyond.

A Church with a capital 'C'

Anti-Homo Geweld

Agressie tijdens Pride

In Amsterdam is een 34-jarige Ierse gay in de nacht van zaterdag op zondag zwaargewond geraakt nadat hij op de Nassaukade / Kinkerstraat met een zwaar voorwerp werd neergeslagen. Het slachtoffer is met een kaak- en neusbreuk en een verschoven nekwervel opgenomen in een ziekenhuis en moest een spoedoperatie ondergaan. Zijn toestand wordt omschreven als stabiel. De politie is een groot onderzoek gestart. Het rechercheteam van District West roept getuigen op zich te melden.

Even na 03.00 uur liep de Ier met z'n Spaanse vriend over de Nassaukade, terugkomend van de Gay Pride. Twee agressieve jongemannen riepen iets naar het stel waarna een korte woordenwisseling ontstond. Dit ontaardde in een handgemeen waarbij het slachtoffer met een hard voorwerp werd geslagen en bijna direct knock-out ging.

De politie heeft in de nacht van zondag op maandag met een speciaal team getracht zicht te krijgen op de mogelijke daders. Ondanks de extra inzet van agenten in burger en op de motor kon nog niemand worden gearresteerd.

Omdat er rekening wordt gehouden met homogerelateerd geweld nemen politie en het openbaar ministerie de zaak hoog op.

De voortvluchtige daders, een Nederlandse man van begin twintig en een Arabische-Marokkaanse uitziende man van eind twintig, worden gezocht. Ze worden verdacht van poging tot doodslag.

De Ier ligt met een gebroken kaak, gebroken neus en een verschoven nekwervel in het ziekenhuis.

De recherche van District West is op zoek naar getuigen van dit voorval. Zij kunnen zich melden via: 0900 - 8844.

In stadsdeel Oud-West werden verder twee Amerikaanse homo's door drie vermoedelijk Marokkaanse jongens uitgescholden, geschopt en geslagen en belaagd met traangas, zo meldt Het Parool. De politie onderzoekt nog of het gaat om geweld tegen homo's of om een beroving.

Diezelfde nacht werden twee studenten aangehouden nadat zij een krans van het Homomonument in het water hadden geschopt. Zij zijn opgepakt voor openlijke geweldpleging en zullen worden voorgeleid.

Drie keer is het afgelopen weekend misgegaan.

Twee Amerikaanse homo's werden door drie jongens uitgescholden, geschopt en met pepperspray mishandeld, er werd een krans bij het homomonument in het water geschopt en er werd een Ier zwaar mishandeld.

De homoseksuele Ierse man liep na de Gay Pride met zijn Spaanse vriend terug naar het hotel, toen ze op de Nassaukade woorden kregen met twee agressieve jongens. Dat liep uit op een drama: de Ier kreeg een klap in z'n gezicht met een zwaar voorwerp, waardoor hij zwaargewond met een kaak- en neusbreuk en een verschoven nekwervel in het ziekenhuis belandde. Hij werd met spoed geopereerd en zijn toestand is nu stabiel.

De politie neemt de zaak hoog op en roept getuigen op zich te melden. De daders worden verdacht van poging tot doodslag.

Mishandelingen homo's Kinkerbuurt

In de omgeving van de Kinkerstraat zijn tijdens het Gay Pride weekend twee homostellen belaagd.

Vrijdagnacht werden twee Amerikanen met pepperspray bespoten en geslagen.

Zaterdagnacht werd een Ierse homo met een zwaar voorwerp in het gezicht geslagen. Hij is met ernstige verwondingen in het ziekenhuis opgenomen.

Zondag werd tevergeefs een actie op touw gezet om de daders op heterdaad te betrappen. Volgens de politie gaat het echter om verschillende incidenten waarbij in totaal vijf daders betrokken waren.

Geweld vermoedelijk homogerelateerd

De politie houdt er sterk rekening mee dat het geweld tegen de homoparen van afgelopen weekend homogerelateerd is.

In de Kinkerbuurt werden twee homoparen belaagd, een 34-jarige Ierse man raakte daarbij zwaargewond. Bij het homomonument bij de Westerkerk werd een krans vernield en in het water gegooid.

Amsterdam stond de afgelopen dagen in het teken van de Gay Pride, het jaarlijkse festival voor homo's en lesbiënnes. Veel deelnemers spraken zich daar uit tegen het geweld en de intolerantie waar homo's de laatste tijd in Amsterdam het slachtoffer van zijn.

Safe(r) Sex?

How 'Safe' is 'Safe Sex'?

I've searched the Net for hard evidence on the safety of condoms and the use of condoms, but not even the 'holier than thou' Terence Higgins Trust dares to put a figure on it.

"Of all the ways you can lower the risks you take in your sex life using condoms is the most effective. Condoms have one of the highest success rates at stopping unwanted pregnancies and preventing many sexually transmitted infections, including HIV (the virus that can lead to AIDS)."

First of all, the fact that the THT even suggests that there are alternatives to condom use is something that in the Netherlands unthinkable is. A hint that risk reduction strategies could be as useful and/ or efficient as condom use is seen as almost criminal here.

The Netherlands is also the only nation left that talks about 'Safe Sex'. The rest of the world agrees that condom use is efficient but not 100% and can therefore never be called 'Safe', at the most 'Safer'.

The strange hypocrisy is of course that so called low risk activities such as dick sucking etc. are now regarded as somehow more acceptable. Or te be more precise, the risk is more acceptable. There are no figures for this, no documentation, no tests or research. How the hell we got the idea that some low risk activities were 'safe' and others 'not safe' is beyond me. A sort of trade off?

The only way to avoid transferring the virus van one person to the other is if both people have the virus already i.e. serosorting. Why on earth is this so unacceptable? Its a damn sight more effective than a condom at halting the spread of hiv.

Is it the fact that it implies that hiv infected people have sex? Should sick people have sex? Should the men in the invisible wheelchairs be celibate, or even sexless?

Maybe its there that the source of the discrimination lies. For discrimination it is however we try to rationalise it away.


Its okay to be hiv positive.

Its reasonably okay to be hiv positive and gay.

Its not okay to be hiv positive, gay and have sex with other men.

Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!

The cowardly lion found out at the end of the Yellow Brick Road that he already had the 'noive' but just needed a medal to prove it.

The Gay Community still thinks it does not have the 'noive', the courage to make change happen.

Why?

Because there is nothing to fear but fear itself. Because fear is paralysing.

Are we so frightened to lose that which we have? And what is it that we think we have?
